Our story

About Livraria Maré

A small independent bookshop in Faro — curated shelves, thematic corners, and booksellers who take the long view.

Lose yourself to find something

Livraria Maré opened on Rua de Santo António with a simple idea: every book, every publisher, every corner should be thought through — so a visit can feel like wandering until a spine stops you.

In Faro — a city of light, old lanes, and travellers from every shore — we stock classics alongside small independent presses that widen thought and culture. We are a livraria with curation, not a warehouse of bestsellers.

Booksellers may look quiet behind the desk. They are usually plotting the next shelf revolution — poetry nights, utopian reading lists, and illustrated worlds for the next generation.

How we choose

Themes over algorithms

Shelves such as “Women off the shelf”, “Revolutions & utopias”, and “What saves us is poetry” are living categories — restocked when a book earns its place, retired when the conversation moves on.

We also keep a quiet table for new arrivals and a children’s corner of illustrated stories that are simply good stories — and others that make you laugh, fear, learn, and grow.

Visit us in Faro

We are at Rua de Santo António 31, in the pedestrian heart of the old town. Come for a title request, a recommendation, or an hour with no agenda beyond the paper.

Opening hours follow the city’s rhythm: weekdays until early evening, Saturdays a little shorter, Sundays closed so the shelves can rest.
